Description

This is a very attractive set of 6 Canadian Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons from around the 1910s/20s. They are made by Henry Birks & Sons, Canada's foremost jewellers and silversmiths, in their "London Engraved" pattern. Each spoon has a letter "C" elegantly engraved in the cartouche on the finial.

Henry Birks founded his company in Montreal in 1879, being joined by 3 of his sons in 1893 to become Henry Birks & Sons. At the start of the 20th century they expanded across Canada, opening stores in all the major towns and cities. The company is still run by the Birks family today.

The "London Engraved" pattern is an intricate floral and foliate design that was introduced by Birks in 1914 and continued in production into the 1920s and possibly just into the 1930s.

The six coffee spoons are in lovely condition with no dings or dents and just the regular superficial wear you would expect after this period of time. They come in a felt pouch branded for Mappin's Ltd of Montreal. This is a very good fit for the 6 spoons, 3 slotting neatly into each pocket, and may well be where the spoons were originally purchased from.

Each spoon is 10.6cm long and the set of 6 together weighs a very respectable 66.8g of solid Sterling Silver.

The spoons are each marked on the underside of the stem with BIRKS. STERLING.
