Description

Here we have a good quality William IV Sterling Silver Snuff Box with a Gilt interior. The snuff box is oblong with all over line decoration, a floral thumb lift and a blank cartouche.

The snuff box was made in Birmingham and dates to 1835. The makers' mark is T S, which was used by three different silversmiths at this time: Thomas Smith, Thomas Shaw & Thomas Simpson. They all produced snuff boxes and vinaigrettes, so we can only say that it was made by one of them.

Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding in the base plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 185 years of service. There is no significant wear to the gold plating on the interior. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The snuff box measures 4.6cm / 1.8ins by 3.2cm / 1.2ins and is 1.8cm / 0.71ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 39.6g / 1.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, split between the lid and the base on the inside, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter M for 1835, the William IV duty mark and the T S makers' mark for one of our three silversmiths.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the snuff box.
