Description

Here we have a pair of fine quality George III Sterling Silver Table Spoons in the Old English pattern with Bright Cut edges. The spoons have two sets of initials at the top of the stem. The upper set is M S in the style of the 1770s and the lower is W M C in 19th century style, which would have been added later.

The table spoons were made in London by renowned silversmith Thomas Chawner and date to 1777. Brothers Thomas & William Chawner were in partnership between 1759 and 1773 before going their separate ways, with Thomas Chawner continuing by himself. Thomas was one of the most important flatware makers of the 18th century and was directly or indirectly responsible for the careers of many of the Eley, Fearn, Smith & Chawner silversmiths that followed him. He remained in business until the late 1780s.

Condition is extremely good, with just one tiny ding in the bowl of one spoon plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 245 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 21.2cm / 8.3ins long and the pair together weigh in at a substantial 127.6g / 4.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The spoons are bottom struck, meaning there is some distortion to the hallmarks, but they are still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1777 and the T.C makers' mark for Thomas Chawner.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
