Description

This is a smart Edwardian Sterling Silver Sovereign Case. The sovereign case is plain, with no initials or personalisation. The spring loaded coin holder has an engine turned top.

The sovereign case was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1902. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.

Condition is good, with a few dings in the outer case, as you would expect from an item that has spent most of its life on a watch chain or in a pocket for more than 120 years. The coin holder, hinge and clasp are all in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The sovereign case is 4.7cm from ring to hinge, 2.9cm in diameter and 1.3cm deep. It weighs in at a respectable 17.8g of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the A & J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sovereign case.
