Here we have an unusual and stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver and Bakelite Powder Bowl. The silver lid has engine turned decoration in two bands surrounding a blank circular cartouche in the centre. The two part bakelite base is black as is the bakelite lining of the silver lid.

The powder bowl is part of the Chic-Pak range. These were produced in the 1930s and were usually made entirely of bakelite in a variety of colours and swirling patterns. This De-Luxe Model was only produced in very small quantities and features smart black bakelite with a Sterling Silver lid by Joseph Gloster Ltd of Birmingham and dated to 1936.

Condition is good with no chips or cracks in the bakelite and just a few tiny dings in the silver lid. It would still look very chic and stylish on any dressing table, period or modern. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The powder bowl is 13cm / 5.1ins in diameter and stands 6cm / 2.3ins high. It weighs in at 245.5g / 8.66oz.

The hallmarks, on the side of the lid, are a little rubbed from polishing but still ok to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter M for 1936 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
