Description

This is a good quality large Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The mustard spoon was made by James & Josiah Williams of Bristol and assayed in Exeter in 1859. Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol were a hugely successful firm of silversmiths, the biggest in England outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They traced their history back to Robert Williams succeeding to the business of William Woodman in around 1838. The firm passed through several generations of the Williams family becoming Josiah Williams & Co in 1879. Later partners included George Jackson and David Fullerton before they became a limited company in 1925. They finally ceased trading around 1940.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 165 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mustard spoon is 12.7cm / 5ins long and weighs in at a respectable 14.1g / 0.49oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter C for 1859, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JW & JW makers' mark for James & Josiah Williams.
