Description

This is a high quality Vintage Sterling Silver Bottle Coaster with a turned wooden base. The coaster is circular with bowed sides and a gadrooned top rim. There is a silver button in the centre of the base and green baize covering on the underside. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The bottle coaster was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1982. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The coaster is 14.5cm / 5.7ins in diameter and 4.3cm / 1.7ins high and weighs in at 247g / 8.7oz. It will hold a bottle up to 10cm / 3.9ins in diameter.

The hallmarks, on the bottom rim, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter H for 1982 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bottle coaster.
