Description

This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Dessert Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon has the initials M B elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The dessert spoon was made in London by famous female silversmith Hester Bateman and dates to 1789. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by the remarkable Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. Hester Bateman silverware is now highly collectable.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 235 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dessert spoon is 16.6cm / 6.5ins long and weighs in at a respectable 30g / 1.06oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter o for 1789, the George III duty mark and the distinctive H B makers' mark for Hester Bateman.
