Description

This is a fine Set of Five George IV Sterling Silver Teaspoons. The teaspoons are in the Old English pattern with shell bowls and bright cut engraving down the front of the stems. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The teaspoons were made by silversmith William Hope and assayed in Exeter in 1830. William Hope was based in Plymouth Dock in Devon. He was a specialist spoon maker who was active between around 1816 and the early 1830s and sent his items to Exeter to be hallmarked as this was the assay office for the whole of South West England until its closure in 1883. His spoons and flatware are always of good quality.

Condition is very good, with just a few tiny dings in the shell bowls and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 190 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teaspoons are each 13.4cm / 5.3ins long and the set of five together weighs in at a very respectable 59.7g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are a little rubbed but still legible. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter o for 1830, the George IV duty mark and the W H makers' mark for William Hope.
