Description

This is an attractive and unusual George III Sterling Silver Caddy Spoon. The stem has a shell finial, a thread and scroll stem with foliate engraving down the centre and the initials G F S-C elegantly engraved in the cartouche. The bowl is oblong with a scalloped edge and a lozenge pattern engraved in the base.

The caddy spoon was made in Birmingham by silversmith John Bettridge and dates to 1817. John Bettridge registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1817. He is best known for his spoons and flatware, particularly caddy spoons, but also produced other small items of silverware including some fine quality vinaigrettes. He remained in business into the late 1830s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 205 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The caddy spoon is 7.7cm / 3ins long and 3.9cm / 1.5ins across the bowl. It weighs in at 8.5g / 0.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside base of the bowl, are well struck but a little difficult to read because of the engraved pattern. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter t for 1817, the George III duty mark and the I B makers' mark for John Bettridge.
