Description

Here we have an elegant George III Cut Glass Mustard Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid and Handle. The oval glass pot has a slice cut body surmounted with a band of diamond cut decoration. The silver collar and handle are line decorated and the domed lid has an urn shaped finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The mustard pot was made in London by silversmith Charles Chesterman Jr and dates to 1804. Charles Chesterman Sr registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1741. He was an accomplished silversmith primarily making silver tableware. His wife Ann registered her first mark in 1775 and then ran the business until her husband’s death in 1780, when their son Charles Chesterman Jr registered his mark and took over the firm. He remained active until around 1810.

Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and no dings or dents in the silver. The inner rim on the lid has become slightly separated at one end but this doesn't affect the function or appearance of the pot. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mustard pot is 7.7cm / 3ins from rim to handle, 7.3cm / 2.9ins across and 11cm / 4.3ins high. It weighs in at 241.8g / 8.5oz.

The hallmarks, on the front of the collar, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter I for 1804, the George III duty mark and the C C makers' mark for Charles Chesterman Jnr. There is a secondary partial set on the inside rim of the lid showing the lion passant and the C C makers' mark.
