Here we have a fine quality Pair of Vintage Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The candlesticks have circular bases, weighted for stability, with an elaborate embossed birds, flowers and foliage design on the top. The stems have embossed acanthus leaf patterns surrounding blank cartouches on each side. The sconces are tapered, with line decoration around the bottom and embossed foliage on the top rim.

These were probably originally intended for use on a dressing table or desk but they would work perfectly well on a dining table or just for ambient light in a living room.

The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by Broadway & Co and date to 1973. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company.

Condition is extremely good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the bottom rims plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 50 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each candlestick stands 9.5cm / 3.7ins high and is 8.5cm / 3.3ins in diameter across the base. The pair together weigh in at 322.8g / 11.4oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.

The hallmarks, low down on each base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Y for 1973 and the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co.
