Description

This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salt spoon was made in London by silversmiths Thomas Wallis and Jonathan Hayne and dates to 1818. The firm traced its origin back to a business started by Thomas Wallis in around 1758. His son, Thomas Jnr, formed a partnership with Jonathan Hayne in 1810 and Hayne eventually took sole control of the firm in 1821. He was succeeded by his son Samuel Hayne who took Dudley Cater as his partner in 1836. They finally ceased trading in 1865.

Condition is very good, with just one slight ding in the stem plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 200 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 9.2cm / 3.6ins long and weighs in at 8.4g / 0.29oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are somewhat rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter c for 1818, the George III duty mark and the T W over J H makers' mark for Thomas Wallis and Jonathan Hayne.
