Description

This is an unusual Vintage US Sterling Silver Napkin Ring with a model of plane mounted on the top. The napkin ring is an extended oval and the plane is modelled on a North American Aviation B-25 Mitchell, one of the principal bombers used by the Allies during WW2 and the immediate period afterwards.

The napkin ring was made in the USA by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island and dates to around the late 1940s or 1950s. One of the most famous names in American silverware, the Gorham Manufacturing Company began life in 1831 when Jabez Gorham and Henry Webster founded Gorham & Webster. They went through various partnerships and name changes until settling as the Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1865. Based in Providence, RI, they were hugely successful up until the 1960s when the company was sold and then became just a brand name changing owners on many occasions.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The napkin ring is 6.2cm / 2.4ins long, 5cm / 1.9ins across the wingspan of the plane and 2.6cm / 1in high. It weighs in at a respectable 31.3g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The inside base of the napkin ring is stamped Gorham, with the lion, anchor and G symbols that were their trademark and the single word Sterling.
