Description

This is a smart Vintage Sterling Silver Candlestick from the 1970s. The candlestick has a circular base, weighted for stability, which has a ring of beaded decoration on the upper side. The tapered stem rises to an urn shaped sconce.

The candlestick was made in Birmingham by silversmiths A.T. Cannon Ltd and dates to 1979. Founded in the 1960s, A.T. Cannon Ltd operated from premises in Barr Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter but also had a mark registered in Sheffield. They made small pieces of silverware, candlesticks and many commemorative items, particularly for Royal Events. The firm ceased trading in the early 2000s.

Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding and a slight bruise in the bottom rim plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The candlestick stands 14.8cm / 5.8ins high and is 6.5cm / 2.5ins in diameter across the base. It weighs in at 127.1g / 4.5oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1979 and the A.T.C makers' mark for A.T Cannon Ltd.
