Here we have a very fine Set of Six George III Sterling Silver Bright Cut Teaspoons. The teaspoons are in the classic Old English pattern which has been enhanced with bright cut engraving down the fronts of the stems and there is a letter M elegantly engraved in the cartouches.

The teaspoons were made in London by silversmiths George Smith and Thomas Hayter and date to 1797. George Smith registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1771. He was principally a spoon maker but other pieces by him are known. In 1791 he was joined in partnership by his son-in-law Thomas Hayter and they continued together until George's death in 1804 after which Thomas continued the business until around 1815, when he was joined by his son George Hayter and they were partners for a further 10 years.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 225 years. It seems likely that the spoons have never seen a great deal of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each teaspoons is 12.7cm / 5ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a very respectable 66.3g / 2.34oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date mark B for 1797, the George III duty mark and the G S over T H makers' mark for George Smith & Thomas Hayter.
