Description

This is a stylish George V Sterling Silver Candlestick. The candlestick has a hexagonal base with a tapering hexagonal stem and an urn shaped sconce. The base is weighted for stability and covered with green baize to avoid scratching the surface it is sitting on.

The candlestick was made by James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1911. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.

Condition is fair to good. There are a few small dings in the stem and base of the candlestick and a shallow flat spot on the rim of the sconce but it still looks very smart when in use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The candlestick stands 17.3cm / 6.8ins high and is 6.9cm / 2.7ins across the hexagonal base. It weighs in at 165.6g / 5.8oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the cursive date letter L for 1911 and the J D over W D in a shield makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlestick.
