Description

This is an elegant Vintage Sterling Silver Specimen Vase bearing the special mark for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. The vase has a round base, weighted for stability, with a circle of beaded decoration. The tapered stem rises from a small knop and flares out to a beaded top rim.

The vase was made by silversmiths A.T. Cannon Ltd and assayed in Sheffield in 1977. Founded in the 1960s, A.T. Cannon Ltd operated from premises in Barr Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter but also had a mark registered in Sheffield. They made small pieces of silverware and many commemorative items, particularly for Royal Events. The firm ceased trading in the early 2000s.

Overall condition is good, with just a couple of small dings in the tapered stem plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The vase stands 16.8cm / 6.6ins high and is 6.3cm / 2.5ins in diameter across the base. It weighs in at 94.2g / 3.3oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.

The hallmarks, on the upper part of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the white rose assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter C for 1977, the special stamp for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977 and the A.T.C in a shield makers' mark for A.T. Cannon Ltd.
