Description

This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Mounted 5.5in x 3.3in Photo Frame with a wooden easel style back. The frame is a tapered oblong with a scalloped top. There is thread decoration around the edge with decorative motifs in the four corners and top and bottom centre.

The photo frame was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Green & Cadbury Ltd and dates to 1923. The firm was founded by Edwin Green around 1858 who was soon joined in partnership by Joel Cadbury, a cousin of the famous chocolate making family. Their principal business was making luxury buttons but they also produced what were termed silver fancy goods, particularly prayer book covers, photo frames, button hooks, vanity and manicure sets, purses and cigar and cigarette cases. They ceased trading in the mid-1930s.

Condition is good, with just a few little dings in the silver mount plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after 100 years on display. The strut hinge is in good working order and the frame stands securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The frame stands 17.5cm / 6.9ins high and is 12.7cm / 5ins wide. With the strut extended it is 8.5cm/ 3.3ins deep and all together it weighs in at 181.1g / 6.4oz.

The hallmarks, at the bottom left corner of the silver mount, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1923 and the G & C Ld makers' mark for Green & Cadbury Ltd.
