Description

This is a fine quality large Edwardian Sterling Silver Spoon. The spoon has a depiction of King Alfred the Great as the finial, based on the statue in Winchester by Hamo Thorneycroft RA, that was unveiled in 1899 to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Alfred's death in 899.

The spoon was made in London by silversmith Samuel Jacob and dates to 1901. Samuel Jacob registered his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1892. He produced a wide range of silverware from belt buckles to spoons to trophy cups, all of consistently good quality. He remained in business into the early 1910s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years. It seems likely that this has been kept as a treasured souvenir rather than be used at the table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 20.1cm / 7.9ins long and 5cm / 1.9ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 54.6g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1901 and the S J makers' mark for Samuel Jacob. On the back of the Alfred finial there is also a registered design number of 375012, showing that the design of the spoon also dates to 1901.
