2 x George III Silver Salt Spoons, London, 1791
Description
This is a fine quality pair of George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoons in the classic Old English pattern. At the top of the stems the spoons have the Peile family crest of a five pointed star above a mural coronet with an elegantly engraved letter P beneath. The salt spoons were made in London in 1791 by renowned silversmiths George Smith (III) and William Fearn, members of the Smith, Eley, Fearn & Chawner quartet of silversmith families who dominated London spoon making in the 19th century. George and William were in partnership between 1786 and around 1796.
Condition is good, with just a shallow flat spot to the underside of the bowl on one spoon, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 9.4cm / 3.7ins long and the pair together weigh in at 18.0g / 0.63oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and easy to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' marks. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter q for 1791, the George III duty mark and the G S over W F makers' mark for George Smith (III) and William Fearn.
