Description

This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Thimble. The British size 18 thimble has a band of floral decoration around the lower half and the classic honeycomb finish on the upper half. The bottom rim is stamped THE SPA, so this was probably a souvenir from a visit to a Spa town, perhaps Leamington Spa where it was made.

The thimble was made by Henry Griffith & Sons and assayed in Birmingham in 1930. Henry Griffith founded his firm in Birmingham in the 1870s, becoming Henry Griffith & Sons around 1890. They specialised in silver jewellery, smoking accessories, thimbles and small personal items. In 1919 they relocated to nearby Leamington Spa in Warwickshire and remained in business until at least the late 1970s.

Condition is good, with just a few tiny pinholes around the middle seam and the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The thimble is 2.2cm high and 1.8cm in diameter across the bottom rim. It weighs in at 3.5g of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, around the bottom rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1930 and the H.G & S makers' mark for Henry Griffith & Sons.
