Description
Here we have a sophisticated Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Specimen Vase from the Edwardian Era. The vase has an organic look with a four lobed base that is weighted for stability. The slender stem tapers outwards to the quatrefoil bowl which has a beaded rim.The vase was made in London by silversmiths Horace Woodward & Co and dates to 1908. The firm was established around 1850 by George Cartwright and Joseph Hirons, with Horace Woodward joining as a partner in 1853. They were silversmiths and electroplaters, active in both Birmingham and London and were involved in the Great Exhibition (1851) and many other international fairs. In 1865 Woodward became the sole proprietor and the name of the firm was changed to Horace Woodward & Co. Woodward left the company in 1883 but it continued under his name until it was bought by Adie Brothers in 1919.
Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding low down on the stem plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 14cm / 5.5ins high and is 6cm / 2.3ins across the top rim. It weighs in at 206.8g / 7.3oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, on the side of the bowl, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1908 and the H W & Co Ld makers' mark for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
