Description

This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Handled Button Hook with a Steel Shaft in the Arts & Crafts style. The silver handle has an embossed naturalistic design of berries and foliage surrounding blank cartouches on either side.

The button hook was made in Birmingham by Kay & Co and dates to 1902. The firm was founded in Worcester in 1890, initially as Kay’s Universal Store of Worcester before changing to just Kay & Co in 1895. The company was a maker and retailer of jewellery, watches, clocks and household items. The clock on Platform 1 at Paddington Station is by Kay & Co, installed in 1903 and still in working order today. They ceased trading in the early 2000s.

Condition is good, with just a couple of tiny dings in the cartouche and a little wear to the high polish on the steel shaft as you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The button hook is 17.7cm / 6.9ins long and weighs in at 30.0g / 1.06oz.

The hallmarks, on one side of the handle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the K & Co Ld makers' mark for Kay & Co Ltd.
