Description

This is a stylish set of Six George V Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons. The spoons are in the Seal Top style which dates back to the 17th century and was revived as a pattern in the early 20th century. They have round bowls with rat tail backs and the distinctive flat topped finials that give them the seal top name. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The coffee spoons were made in Birmingham by Adie Brothers Ltd and date to 1927. The firm was founded in 1906 when two established Birmingham silversmiths, McKewan & Adie and E.S. Barnsley & Co, were merged under the leadership of Percy Adie to form Adie Brothers Ltd. The company was very successful and produced a wide range of silverware until the 1960s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just a slight kink in the stem of one spoon plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 95 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 8.6cm / 3.4ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a respectable 44.4g / 1.57oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bowls, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter C for 1927 and the distinctive A Bros Ltd in an oval makers' mark for Adie Brothers Ltd.
