Description

Here we have an elegant George III Sterling Silver Teapot. The teapot is oval with a hinged lid. The body is decorated with two bands of star decoration at top and bottom and there is a blank cartouche on either side.

The teapot was made in London by silversmith Henry Chawner and dates to 1788. Henry Chawner registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1786 and worked from premises first at Amen Corner and then in Paternoster Row making a wide range of domestic silverware. In 1796 he formed a partnership with John Emes which lasted until around 1808 after which he appears to have retired with his wife and family to a large country house in Newton Valence, Hampshire. In 1801 he was elected to the Court of Assistants, the council of the Livery Companies of the City of London.

Condition is fair and commensurate with a teapot that has seen 235 years of good service. There are a few little dings and the the domed top of the lid has been repaired on the inside at some point in its life. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teapot measures 25.5cm / 10ins from spout to handle, 10cm / 3.9ins across the body and stands 14cm / 5.5ins high. It weighs in at 349.1g / 12.3oz.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are clear to read, with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1788, the George III duty mark and the H C makers' mark for Henry Chawner.

Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
