Description

This is a good quality Pair of Mid-Century Sterling Silver Egg Cups. The egg cups are circular with low pedestal bases. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The egg cups were made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Clifford Davis and date to 1952, the first year of the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Founded in 1901 in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, Henry Clifford Davis produced a wide range of silverware from small personal items such as manicure sets and sewing kits up to large tea and coffee sets, candlesticks and candelabra. They became H.C. Davis Ltd in the early 1930s and remained in business into the 1960s.

Overall condition is good but one egg cup appears to have been slightly compressed at some point in its life and has a few tiny dings in the top rim. There is also the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each egg cup is 6cm / 2.3ins high and 4.8cm / 1.9ins in diameter. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 59.1g / 2.08oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, just below the top rims, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter C for 1952, the Queen Elizabeth II coronation mark and the H C D makers' mark for Henry Clifford Davis.
