Description

Here we have a fine quality George II Sterling Silver Waiter or Small Salver. The waiter has a pie crust rim and stands on three hoof feet with a ring of scroll and flower decoration around the base. The centre of the base is engraved with the full coat of arms of the MacDonald family with the four quarters featuring a lion rampant, an armoured arm holding a cross crosslet, a lymphad (heraldic ship) and a salmon.

The salver was made in London by silversmith William Peaston and dates to 1752. William Peaston registered his first mark at London’s Goldsmith’s Hall in 1746. He specialised in making particularly fine salvers of varying sizes. William went into partnership with Robert Peaston, probably his son, in 1756 and together they broadened their range of silverware. William & Robert remained working together until the mid 1760s after which Robert continued by himself until the late 1770s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 270 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The waiter is 16cm / 6.3ins in diameter and stands 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 178.8g / 6.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter r for 1752 and the distinctive W P makers' mark for William Peaston.
