Description

Here we have an elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Candlestick. The candlestick has a star shaped base with scroll and flower decoration that is weighted for stability and has a green baize covering on the underside to avoid scratching. The stem is a tapering pillar and the sconce has a star shaped top with matching decoration to the base.

The candlestick was made in Birmingham by S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd and dates to 1894. The firm was originally founded in Bristol by Abraham Solomon Blanckensee in 1826 but very quickly moved to premises in Birmingham. Saul Samuel was briefly a partner but left in 1858 and from 1887 they were known as S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd until they ceased trading in the late 1930s.

Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The candlestick stands 13.5cm / 5.3ins high and is 7.1cm / 2.8ins across the base. It weighs in at 135.1g / 4.76oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.

The hallmarks, on the bottom rim of the base, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1894 and the S.B & S Ld makers' mark for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlestick.
