Description

This is a charming small George VI Sterling Silver Four Slot Toast Rack. The toast rack has a rectangular base with rounded corners standing on four ball feet. The five dividers are square topped with a finger ring handle on the central one. This is a small toast rack, ideal for a single slice of toast cut into four triangles on a breakfast tray.

The toast rack was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Hukin & Heath and dates to 1941. Silver was a restricted material during WW2, so pieces from the war years are comparatively rare. Founded in Birmingham by Jonathan Hukin and John Heath in 1855, the firm is best known for its collaboration with Dr Christopher Dresser and their exhibitions of his groundbreaking designs for them at their London showroom. Hugely successful, the firm remained in business producing a broad range of consistently top quality silverware up until 1953.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The toast rack base is 7.1cm / 2.8ins by 4.2cm / 1.6ins and it stands 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 34.6g / 1.22oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, at one end of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter R for 1941 and the H & H makers' mark for Hukin & Heath.
