Description

Here we have a good quality George II Sterling Silver Pap Boat. Pap boats were used to feed infants and the infirm with a thin porridge or pap that was easy to digest and could be poured from the boat making feeding easier. This pap boat is in the classic shape and has no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The pap boat was made in London in 1759. The makers' mark is somewhat worn but is almost certainly that of Robert Albin Cox, who was active in London during the 1750s.

Overall condition is good, with no splits and just a shallow bruise and a couple of small dings in the base plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 260 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pap boat measures 11.6cm / 4.5ins from lip to rim, 6.8cm / 2.7ins across the body and 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 61.8g / 2.18oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, at the back of the boat, are clear to read with just the makers' mark being somewhat rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter D for 1759 and the script R.C makers' mark for Robert Albin Cox.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the pap boat.
