Description

This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Snuff Box with a Gilt Interior. Both the top and bottom are decorated with an attractive checkerboard pattern surrounding a blank cartouche.

The snuff box was made in Birmingham by silversmith Samuel Pemberton and dates to 1807. Samuel Pemberton established his firm in 1775. He quickly established a good reputation particularly for his vinaigrettes and snuff boxes, although he also made a variety of other items. He was later joined by his son with the company becoming Pemberton, Son & Mitchell in 1812 and then S. Pemberton & Son in 1821.

Overall condition is good but there is a very small hole in the top right hand corner of the base and a small drop of solder on the inside of the lid suggesting an old repair, possibly of another small hole, plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 215 years of use. The hinge is in good order and the box closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The snuff box is 4.9cm / 1.9ins by 3.3cm / 1.3ins and 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs in at 26.4g / 0.93oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the base, are a little rubbed but still ok to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter j for 1807, the George III duty mark and the S P makers' mark for Samuel Pemberton.
