Description

This is a good quality set of four Victorian Sterling Silver Egg Spoons in the Old English Beaded pattern. The spoons have the distinctive shovel shape of egg spoons and are ideal for a soft boiled egg. Each spoon has the letter F elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The egg spoons were made in London by renowned silversmiths Chawner & Co and date to 1874. Chawner & Co is considered to be the most important flatware manufacturer in London in the 19th century and they participated in the Great Exhibition in 1851. The company was founded by William Chawner in 1815 after he left his partnership with William Eley and William Fearn. He was succeeded by his widow Mary and later by his son-in-law George Adams. The firm was finally sold to Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater in 1883.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 150 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 12cm / 4.7ins long and the set of four together weighs in at a very respectable 78g / 2.75oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter t for 1874, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G A makers' mark for George Adams of Chawner & Co.
