Description

This is a charming George V Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a rectangular base on four ball feet on which are mounted five heart shaped dividers, the middle one having a circular ring handle. Perfect for a romantic breakfast!

The toast rack was made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and dates to 1931. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.

Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 90 years of good service on the breakfast table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The toast rack is 9.3cm / 3.7ins by 4.5cm / 1.8ins and stands 8cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 78.7g / 2.78oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of one end of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter o for 1931 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John Deakin and William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
