Description

Here we have a fine quality George II Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The cream jug is of bulbous form and stands on three pad feet. There is a scalloped top rim and the scrolling handle has acanthus decoration on the top. The initials A W are elegantly engraved on the front of the body.

The cream jug was made in London by silversmith Richard Zouch and dates to 1743. Richard Zouch registered his first mark at London’s Goldsmith’s Hall in 1735 and a revised mark in 1739. He primarily produced good quality tableware, especially cream jugs, sauce boats and gravy boats and remained in business until at least the late 1740s and possibly later.

Condition is good with just a few little dings or one side of the body and a very slight flat spot on the other. The lip is slightly askew but still pours perfectly well. Overall it has survived very well for 280 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cream jug measures 9cm / 3.5ins from lip to handle, 5.6cm / 2.2ins across the body and stands 8.7cm / 3.4ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 99.5g / 3.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are somewhat rubbed as you would expect but still easy to decipher. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter h for 1743 and the distinctive R Z below a flower makers' mark for Richard Zouch.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
