Description

This is an ornate late Victorian Sterling Silver Two Pronged Belt Buckle. The buckle is of roughly oval shape with a pierced and moulded design of flowers and swirling foliage.

The buckle was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1893. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The buckle measures 8.6cm / 3.4ins by 4.5cm / 1.8ins and weighs in at 36.2g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the front of the buckle, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter t for 1893 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews. In addition, there is a lion passant on the prongs and a lion passant and date letter t on the belt attachment bar, so you can be confident that this is Sterling Silver throughout.
