Description

Here we have a very elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Teapot from the Edwardian era. The teapot has an overall oval shape with an embossed Art Nouveau pattern around the body and on the lid. The handle and finial are ebonised wood.

The teapot was made in Sheffield by Joseph Rodgers & Sons and dates to 1908. Joseph Rodgers set up his firm in 1843, becoming Joseph Rodgers & Sons in 1862, when his son George became a partner in the business. They were very accomplished silversmiths and electroplaters with manufacturing in Sheffield and a showroom in London's Holborn Viaduct, home to many high end retailers at the time. They remained in business into at least the early 1970s.

Condition is generally very good, with just a couple of shallow bruises to the rim on one side of the pot plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teapot measures 24.4cm / 9.6ins from spout to handle, 10.9cm / 4.3ins across the body and stands 12.3cm / 4.8ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 384.8g / 13.6oz. The capacity is 710ml / 1.25pints.

The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter q for 1908 and the J.R makers' mark alongside the cross and star trademark for Joseph Rodgers & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
