Description

This is a distinguished pair of George V Sterling Silver Prize Spoons. The teaspoons were given as competition prizes by the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs and their badge is at the top of the stem on each spoon, with their motto Look Forward running up the stem.

The Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs was founded in 1901 to encourage civilians to practice rifle shooting in response to a perceived poor performance by British riflemen during the Boer War. It still exists today under the title National Smallbore Rifle Association.

The spoons were made in Sheffield by Walter Trickett and date to 1919. Walter Trickett registered his first mark at the Sheffield assay office in 1894. His firm specialised in trophy cups, of which they produced a wide variety of designs and sizes, and flatware to be given as competition prizes which was generally made to order. The firm became Walter Trickett & Co in the late 1920s and remained in business into the early 1970s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and the barest minimum of superficial surface wear, which suggests that these have always been kept as treasured items rather than put to use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoons are each 11.3cm / 4.4ins long and the pair together weigh in at a very respectable 30.4g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bowls, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter b for 1919 and the W.T makers' mark for Walter Trickett. In addition, the undersides of the stems are stamped with the registered design number 502958, which dates the original design to 1907.
