Description

This is a striking late Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The napkin ring is circular with an embossed vine leaf and grape design surrounding the central cartouche. The cartouche has some rather rubbed initials engraved it which we think are "V M C".

The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by silversmith William Devenport and dates to 1896. William Devenport founded his firm in the 1890s in the heart of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. Quickly successful, the company produced a huge range of silverware. After William's death in the early 1930s, the company became William Devenport & Co and remained in business into the early 1950s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The napkin ring is 4.6cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 2.5cm / 0.98ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 22.5g / 0.79oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, just below the upper rim, are well struck and clear to read. The show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter w for 1896 and the W.D makers' mark for William Devenport.
