Description

This is an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Handled Toasting Fork. The silver handle has a typically flowing Nouveau design of a female figure surrounded by flowers and foliage. The silver plated steel stem and prongs have a broad trefoil head with three upturned tines to keep a secure hold on your bread or muffin. This is a shorter length toasting fork and was probably intended for toasting muffins at the breakfast table.

The toasting fork was made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths Crisford & Norris and dates to 1898. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents in the silver handle and just a little wear to the silver plating on the stem of the fork. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The toasting fork is 18.8cm / 7.4ins long and weighs in at 32.2g / 1.13oz.

The hallmarks, on the side of the handle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter y for 1898 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
