Description

This is a very stylish pair of Mid-Century Sterling Silver Cuff Links in the bullet back form. The cuff links are square with a central bark effect band and faceted lines above and below which catch the light to create a sparkling effect. They are supplied in a modern gift box.

The cuff links were made in Birmingham by jewellers John Ashford & Son and date to 1969. John Ashford founded his firm in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter in the 1840s, initially making small items such as buckles and buttons but later moving into jewellery, particularly men’s jewellery. In 1905 the business was sold to Joseph Aitken but continued to trade under the John Ashford & Son name. Their purpose built Arts & Crafts style premises, which opened in 1912, is now a listed building. The firm ceased trading in 1980.

Condition is very good, with just a slight bend in the shaft of one cuff link plus the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each cufflink is 1.5cm square and 2.6cm long. The pair together weigh in at 8.8g of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the reverse of each cuff link, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter U for 1969 and the J A & S makers' mark for John Ashford & Son. The shafts are also marked J A & S and the bullets are stamped Sterling Silver.
