Description

This is an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The ring is circular with a pinched waist and crimped upper and lower rims. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by silversmiths J.E. Bushell and dates to 1896. Joseph Edward Bushell was originally a partner with George Bushell in the electroplating firm G & J Bushell but they split in 1888 to form two separate companies. Joseph registered his makers’ mark at Birmingham assay office in 1891 and began to produce Sterling Silver items alongside his electroplated wares. The firm specialised almost exclusively in tableware and flatware. They ceased trading in 1945.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service on the dining table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The napkin ring is 4.4cm / 1.7ins in diameter and 2.1cm / 0.83ins deep. It weighs in at 10.4g / 0.37oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the body of the napkin ring are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter w for 1896 and the J.E.B makers' mark for J.E. Bushell.
