Description

Here we have a smart Edwardian Sterling Silver Vase. The vase has a circular base with a knopped stem and a trumpet shaped body rising to a wavy rim. The base is weighted for stability and covered with green baize to avoid scratching the surface it is sitting on.

The vase was made in Birmingham by the firm of Saunders & Shepherd and dates to 1908. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.

The vase has definitely seen some use but overall condition is good. There are some very shallow flat spots around the knop and slight misshaping to the top rim along with a few dings to the bottom of the base but it still looks very elegant with flowers in and it remains watertight. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The vase is 14cm / 5.5ins high and 6.7cm / 2.6ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs in at 110.3g / 3.9oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.

The hallmarks, on the side of the body below the rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter i for 1908 and the C S and F S to either side of a star makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd.
