Description

Here we have a good quality cased Edwardian Sterling Silver Shell Dish and Butter Knife. The shell dish stands on three ball feet and is shaped as a scallop shell. The butter knife is in the classic Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The set was made in Sheffieled by the firm of Harrison Brothers & Howson and dates to 1909. The firm was founded in 1847 when James & Henry Harrison and James Howson acquired the silversmith business of Thomas Sansom & Sons. They quickly established themselves as high class cutlers, silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in the Harrison and Howson families until the business was bought out by Viner's Ltd in 1923, although the brand name was continued by Viner's for some years after that date.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in either the dish or the knife and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. The box is a bit scuffed, particularly around the edges of the lid but the clasp and hinges are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The shell dish is 13.3cm / 5.2ins top to bottom and 13.7cm / 5.4ins across. It stands 2.8cm / 1.1ins high. The butter knife is 12.2cm / 4.8ins long. The set, uncased, weighs in at a very respectable 89.7g / 3.16oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on both pieces are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter r for 1909 and the G H makers' mark for George Howson of Harrison Brothers & Howson.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
