Description
This is an elegant early 20th century Dutch 833 Silver Strainer Spoon. The strainer has a roughly square bowl with pierced lines running down to the central plate which has quatrefoil piercings. The arching stem is topped by a cockerel finial. The strainer spoon was made in Schoonhoven in The Netherlands by renowned silversmiths H. Hooijkaas and dates to 1921. The firm was founded in 1874 by Hubertus Hooijkaas in the Dutch city of Schoonhoven, sometimes called the silver city of the Netherlands as silverware was such an important part of the city’s economy. By the 1930s, H. Hooijkaas was Schoonhoven’s principal employer and the most important silver factory in the city. They produced both silverware and silver plate of consistently high quality and remained in business until around 2008.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The strainer spoon is 12.5cm / 4.9ins long and 5.4cm / 2.1ins across the bowl. It weighs in a respectable 22.4g / 0.79oz of solid silver.
As is standard practice with Dutch silver hallmarks, they are spread around the item. In the bowl in the lion passant above the number 2 for 833 / 1000 grade silver. On the underside of the stem are the Minerva assay mark with a letter M on the helmet for Schoonhoven and the H H makers' mark for H. Hooijkaas and on the tail of the cockerel finial is the date letter L for 1821.
