Here we have a good quality set of three George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoons in the traditional Old English pattern. The spoons have gilded bowls and the initials A H are elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The salt spoons were made in London by noted silversmiths Daniel Urquhart and Naphtali Hart and date to 1808. The business was established in London by Daniel Urquhart & Naphtali Hart in 1791 and their partnership lasted for 20 years. In 1812, probably after Urquhart’s death or retirement, Naphtali Hart continued on his own for another 20 years or so before being joined by his son John Naphtali Hart in the 1830s.

Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding in the bowl of one spoon and some rubbing to the gilding in the bowl of another plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 215 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 10.2cm / 4ins long and the set of three together weighs in at a respectable 30g / 1.06oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter N for 1808, the George III duty mark and the D U over N H makers' mark for Daniel Urquhart & Naphtali Hart.
