George IV Silver Salt Spoon, William Bateman, 1822
Description
This is a smart George IV Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon has the letter B elegantly engraved at the top of the stem. The spoon was made in London by silversmith William Bateman Snr and dates to 1822. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. She was succeeded by her sons Peter and Jonathan in 1790 but Jonathan died soon after and his widow Ann took over his partnership with Peter. They were later joined by Ann’s son William who eventually took over the firm and was finally followed by his son William Jr.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt spoon is 9.6cm / 3.8ins long and weighs in at 8.8g / 0.31oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1822, the George IV duty mark and the W.B makers' mark for William Bateman Snr.
