Description

This is a striking George VI Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver and Gold Guilloche Enamel lid. The glass pot is cylindrical with hobnail cut decoration around the body and a star cut base. The silver lid has an overhanging top and the guilloche enamel is in a sunray design.

The pot was made in Birmingham by Albert Carter and dates to 1942. It is unusual to find silver items like this from the Second World War years as silver was a restricted material and most of the Birmingham facilities had been turned over to war work. Albert Carter established his business in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in 1917. His firm were particularly skilled at guilloche enamelling and it featured on many of their items such as dressing table sets, cigarette cases, powder bowls, bedside clocks and decorative boxes. The company ceased trading in the late 1950s.

Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass pot, no dings or dents in the silver lid and, most importantly, no damage to the guilloche enamel. There is just the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pot is 7cm / 2.7ins high and 7.3cm / 2.9ins in diameter across the top of the lid. The lid by itself weighs in at a very respectable 40g / 1.4oz and all together the pot weighs 201g / 7.1oz.

The hallmarks, on the rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter S for 1942 and the A C makers' mark for Albert Carter.
