Description

This is a fine quality large George IV Irish Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the popular King's Pattern. The spoon has a crest of the head and shoulders of a bearded man which is usually associated with the Maxwell name.

The mustard spoon was made in Dublin by silversmith Patrick Moore and dates to 1822. Patrick Moore was a specialist spoon and flatware maker who was active in Dublin in the early years of the 19th century producing items of consistently good quality. He registered his mark in 1812 and operated from premises at 5 Fleet Street. He appears to have stopped working in the early 1830s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mustard spoon is of a good size and weight measuring 13.6cm / 5.3ins in length and weighing in at a very respectable 28.4g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks are somewhat distorted by the threads along the sides of the stem but can still be deciphered. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter B for 1822, the George IV duty mark and the P M makers' mark for Patrick Moore.
