2 x George III Silver Teaspoons, J & G Piercy 1816
Description
This is a good quality pair of George III Sterling Silver Teaspoons in the classic Fiddle pattern. Both spoons have a crest of a lion rampant nicely engraved at the top of the stem, a device that has been used by many different families. The teaspoons were made in London by silversmiths Josiah & George Piercy and date to 1816. This family firm of specialist spoon makers was begun in London by Josiah Piercy who was made free in the Goldsmiths Company in 1781. He was joined and then followed by two of his sons, George and Josiah Jr who went into partnership from 1812 until 1819. George then carried on by himself until his death in 1827, whereupon Josiah Jr took over the business again and was succeeded by his son Josiah III in 1863.
Condition is generally good with no dings or dents and just a slight misshaping to the bowl of one spoon plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 205 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 14cm / 5.5ins long and the pair together weighs in at 43.5g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are clear to read with just some rubbing to the makers' marks. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter a for 1816, the George III duty mark and the I.P over G.P for Josiah and George Piercy.
